Dance communicates feelings and from these feelings, ideas are communicated.
Students begin to learn the fundamentals of literacy at an early age. We all need to learn how to read, write, and speak. The art of dance can be instrumental in this learning process with the grace of movement. Students can learn to compose ideas through dance movements. Thus, performing a dance is telling a story.
Dance organizes and transforms our thoughts, feelings, ideas, and images into communicative movement sequences that are personally and socially significant. Communication is possible through dance just as ideas are expressed through writing or speaking.
Students can also begin to formulate thoughts about movement by analyzing and discussing dance in the class. Moreover, students can begin to read about dance and develop a historical and aesthetic context for the art.

The successful acquisition of reading and writing in early childhood depends on a solid background in oral language skills. Oral language is an interactive and social process, and music is a natural way for children to experience language in an enjoyable way. Young children seem to be naturally "attuned" to sound and rhythm.
Besides providing enjoyment, music can play an important role in language and literacy development. Beginning in Pre-School, strong social bonds are encouraged through music and songs. Toddlers can begin to experiment with grammatical rules and various rhyming patterns in songs and other written text. Establishing a sense of rhythm can be used to increase a student's awareness of rhyming patterns and alliteration in various areas of reading and writing. For this reason, S.P.A.C.E. offers an advanced literacy through music program for young children.
Every four to six weeks parents are invited to observe the student's reading through music performance. After each performance students will take home treats with photocopied reading books.
Materials: READING SONGS BOOKS, INSTRUMENTS, CD's, DVD's and PLAYERS

Sing & Play is a class for children 3 ½ - 6 years old. It serves as a preparation for families interested in studying an instrument within the Suzuki environment, and is an opportunity for anyone who enjoys music to have fun. In Sing & Play, children will be introduced to the Orff approach of music education, which uses very rudimentary forms of everyday activities for the purpose of creating music by young individuals. This includes singing in groups and performing voice instrumental music, rhymes and playing instruments such as the metallophone, xylophone, glockenspiel, and other percussive instruments.
The music generated is largely of improvisational and original tonal constructions. This builds a sense of confidence and interest in the process of creative thinking. Children also make music together in a group and hence realize the joys of group co-ordination and cohesion. It may also involve the participation of other adults and parents in music making. Thus it brings the role of parent in child education in a central position. During class time, in addition to learning the beginning rhythms, the student develops coordination, the ability to listen carefully and respond physically, to start and stop at a set point in time (pre-ensemble skills), and to take turns. Musical concepts such as dynamics & tempo will be introduced. Each child develops individually and moves to instrument lessons at his or her own pace. Remember that regardless of how much he/she participates or seems to "get it", ear-training will always be in progress!
You and your child's efforts are very important to make Sing & Play a great start for a lifetime of musical enjoyment.
