International Dance Day (World Dance Day) began in 1982 by the International Dance Committee of the UNESCO International Theatre Institute. The most important goal of Dance Day is to increase the awareness of the importance of dance among the general public. The day is also designed to encourage governments all over the world that dance should hold a place in all systems of education at every level. World Dance Day is the perfect opportunity to share with your community the importance that dance has in our culture as an educational and entertaining tool.
Make sure to watch out for more information at both the Lakeview and Peterson location regarding how you and your child can participate in World Dance Day!
There are many social and health benefits to ballroom and Latin dancing, yet one of the most enjoyable aspects is the variety of music that is heard and preserved. Rumba, cha cha, swing, samba, disco, salsa, tango, quickstep, foxtrot and waltz together embrace almost every genre of popular music for over a century. The many number of different styles is often confusing to the beginning dancer, but we are then surprised to learn that the music that we have loved listening to for years belongs to one of these dances.
Jazz and blues songs are usually foxtrot, swing or quickstep -depending on the speed and rhythmic emphasis. Pop songs may fit these same dances or with slower tempos can be a rumba, while faster songs with strong beats, like hip hop, may fit samba, disco, swing or cha cha. Sometimes one song can fit several different dances. For example, Michael Jackson’s Thriller could be danced as a disco, slow swing, cha cha or samba.
